Limestone Floors – How to Keep Limestone Flooring Looking New

By Mark Shannon

Limestone tiles are a popular choice of flooring and can enhance the look and feel of the home, making smaller areas seem larger.

However, limestone is a more porous stone than harder wearing stone such as marble and is prone to scratching.

Continuous heavy traffic can quickly result in a dull and lifeless floor, especially if used in common areas in the home such as kitchens.

The most effective and easy way to maintain that wonderful reflective shine is to sweep your floor daily to remove dirt and grit that is regularly walked through the house.

This will minimise the number of scratches to your limestone floor and it is these scratches that effect the shiny look of the floor the most.

Use a microfiber cloth rather than a broom as this is gentler on the floor.

When washing your limestone flooring, use a soft mop and a mild detergent to maintain the natural colours of the stone and prevent further scratching. Be wary of using shop-bought stone cleaning products as they can often be acidic and damage the finish of the limestone as well as the grout. Also avoid using abrasive cleaners for the same reason.

Clean up spillages as soon as possible to avoid the stain penetrating through the stone. Blot with a paper towel and then use a sponge and mild detergent to remove stains.

Put mats inside and outside the room to collect most of the excess dirt.

Call in a professional stone floor cleaner twice a year to deep clean and protect your limestone floor – this is essential to maintain the look and finish that a limestone floor gives.

The benefits of using a professional are enormous;

Professional stone floor cleaners have state of the art equipment to deep clean stone floors, whilst being gentle enough not to damage the stone or its natural colour.

Using specifically made abrasive pads, floor cleaning machines grind the surface of the stone, then hone it to remove the finer grains of dirt before polishing it with unique products for the floor, ensuring a high-class reflective finish.

A professional will protect your limestone floor with tailor-made products. Protector impregnators and colour enhancers are used, bringing out the natural beauty of the stone and enhancing the stone’s natural colour.

A professional stone floor cleaner will always be on hand to offer advice on cleaning and maintain a stunning finish on your floor, ensuring longevity for the stone floor and easy maintenance for the home-owner.

Shannon Floor Care specialize in cleaning, polishing and protecting Limestone floors, as well as marble floors, ceramic tiles and flagstone floors. More details available on cleaning limestone tiles and stone floors.

Stone flooring has an everlasting appeal that continues to rise in popularity across the world. There are numerous advantages to classic stone options, including:

Stain resistance; stain resistant sealers will aid natural stone’s ability of stain resistance

Durability; evident within some of the oldest buildings known and frequently used for high traffic areas of any property

Natural floor stones generally require less maintenance compared to other variations of flooring. Treating the stone tiles on a regular basis, both after installation and at regular intervals thereafter is required. By Mark A Shannon

ceramic tile cleaning rickmansworth Porcelain tiles, Ceramic tiles and Natural Stone flooring are a sophisticated floor tile choice and range in colours, textures, patters and sizes. These tiles require a low-maintenance cleaning programme and are well-matched for heavy wear areas of any house or property. Porcelain and Ceramic tiles boast high quality, functionality, design and are a floor tile choice that can suit all budget requirements.

Porcelain floor tiles are ideal, matching latest trends for high-end residential and large-scale commercial projects alike. This superior flooring tile choice is available in a variety of colours, textures, patterns, shapes and sizes, creating versatility and alternatives for individual application. Polished and unpolished variations create an elegant and stylish appearance to any home, whether traditional or contemporary.

Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are durable and require a minimal tile cleaning maintenance programme. They are highly recommended for heavy wear areas in any home or property. What is considered as a heavy duty material is therefore regularly used in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and other areas of the home with no compromise in aesthetic appeal. With an emphasis on long-term performance and longevity, porcelain and ceramic flooring is heat resistant, frost proof and breathable. These factors mean that porcelain floor tiling is a great option combined with under floor heating as they conduct heat fabulously, adding to energy efficiency. These tiles are comparatively cheaper when compared with marble or granite but at the same time are scratch resistant and can make rooms appear larger, especially when using lighter shades of porcelain and ceramic tiles.

tile and grount cleaning watfordCaring for your porcelain and ceramic flooring is easy and allows for a hygienic alternative and general cleanliness in your home. When contemplating home improvement and wishing for a tile choice that offers ease of maintenance, porcelain ranks popularly amongst home owners.

It is recommended to remove dust and debris by sweeping your floor well. Using a moist cloth will allow removal of accumulated dirt. Mixing warm water and vinegar will offer assistance to remove stubborn stains; ensure to use a non bleaching cleaning solution if choosing to use a ready made cleaner. It is imperative that you use a soft brush with tough bristles to remove grime stuck to the grout areas and tile.

Once you have removed the stains it is important to them rinse the area and remove any residue. Some shop bought cleaning solutions are harsh and can cause staining or dullness. Porcelain tiles subjected to tough chemicals will appear worn and often dull in appearance. Bleaches, ammonia and acids are not tile friendly and can cause damage to the tile surface.

It is usually best to seek the help of a professional natural stone cleaning expert. Installation of your floor tiles is often considered to be a costly outlay so it is therefore important you employ an expert and qualified floor cleaner and restorer as it is a specialist fitter. Shannon Floorcare have a wealth of individual tile knowledge and will be in a position to use professional cleaning equipment and cleaning solutions to ensure you get the best from your flooring.
